Janet Oates - Composer
Janet is a composer and performer with a PhD in composition from Royal Holloway, University of London. She now has a varied musical career including directing/conducting, teaching, performing in groups ranging from early music to contemporary, classical to jazz; and writing music and leading contemporary music projects.
She has written a chamber opera and an opera for amateurs, prize-winning songs and an oratorio for baroque forces. She is the director of a shanty group and of an experimental vocal ensemble, the CoMA Singers, and runs an ongoing project called Closet Music which explores the auditory imagination rather than works to be performed out loud.
She recently edited two publications for Contemporary Music for All (CoMA), commissioning 24 new pieces for vocal ensemble, and contributing a piece in each volume. An ongoing project is ‘Theorbo Today’, writing, commissioning and performing new music for the theorbo and other baroque instruments, with a focus on female composers.
